Men's Health Performance Specialist, Josh Kwasnicka, Assisting a Client

My name is Josh Kwasnicka, and I’m a Physician Assistant and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with a focused practice in Men’s Health and Performance Medicine. I partner with men to create personalized lifestyle strategies that align with their unique health and performance goals. By thoroughly understanding daily habits, behaviors, and environment – then correlating them with comprehensive laboratory, biometric, and subjective data – we identify the most effective tactics to optimize health, vitality, and long-term performance.

Men’s wellness is about much more than treating symptoms; it’s about optimizing how you feel, perform, and age. In this post, find out why I’m passionate about this work, the impact it can have on men’s lives, and how we bring this personalized approach to ultimate performance fitness to life at Practical Health.

Discovering My Passion

My fascination with nature and human biology began in childhood, largely thanks to my father, who made it a priority to immerse me in the outdoors. Whether it was hiking, fishing, or exploring the woods behind our house, these experiences planted the seeds of curiosity about how the natural world works and how our bodies interact with it.

That curiosity deepened when I started playing competitive sports. I became fascinated by how consistent training, proper recovery, and small adjustments in technique led to noticeable improvements in speed, strength, and skill. The real spark came during high school when I began strength training with my older brother. Watching my body adapt was eye-opening as I gained muscle, increased strength, and recovered faster. The biological changes happened rapidly and visibly, fueling a desire to understand the inner workings of human biology and psychology.

In college, I committed to this passion by pursuing a degree in Biology as a direct pathway to Physician Assistant school. I knew medicine would offer the most rigorous and comprehensive education in the human body. Simultaneously, I continued competing in collegiate soccer and powerlifting. These experiences taught me invaluable lessons in discipline, consistency, and the work ethic required to perform at a high level. Powerlifting, in particular, became an obsession. I trained with relentless focus, rarely missing a session, and achieved above-average results in the sport. However, this single-minded pursuit eventually revealed its limitations.

A Turning Point Toward Balanced Health

While I had become exceptionally strong in the gym, I noticed the trade-offs. My ability to run, sprint, or move with agility had declined sharply. My body fat had climbed to around 25%, and I no longer felt vibrant or healthy despite my strength gains. I realized I had pushed my body into an imbalanced state — powerful in one narrow domain, but compromised in overall function and longevity.

The turning point came when I got my first two dogs — golden retrievers named Odin and Penny. They became my constant companions and pulled me out of the gym and back into nature. Daily hikes and adventures with them reintroduced variety and fun into my movement. I also transformed my nutrition, moving away from a “bulk at all costs” approach to one focused on whole foods, nutrient density, and sustainability. Within a relatively short time, I lost 25 pounds and experienced a dramatic improvement in how I felt day to day, with more energy, a better mood, and greater resilience.

Becoming a father added another powerful layer of motivation. I started mountain biking regularly, which significantly boosted my aerobic capacity and mental well-being. For the first time in my life, I felt truly in control of my health trajectory. This wasn’t just about personal performance anymore; it was about fully showing up for my family. This profound shift gave me the clarity and confidence to transition from simply optimizing my own health to helping other men achieve the same sense of vitality, balance, and long-term control.

From Clinical Experience to Whole-Person Care

As a Physician Assistant, my clinical journey began in surgery and trauma settings, where I developed a detailed understanding of human anatomy and how the body responds to extreme physical stress and injury. I later transitioned into critical care, where I witnessed firsthand the incredible adaptability – and fragility – of human physiology in acutely ill patients.

One pattern stood out clearly: patients with similar injuries or illnesses often recovered at vastly different rates. A 50-year-old man burdened by obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and heart failure frequently required two to three times as many ICU days compared to a similarly aged man who exercised regularly, maintained healthy muscle mass, and kept an appropriate body weight. These disparities were not random.

Through countless conversations with patients, I discovered a common thread: most had never received meaningful education or guidance on how lifestyle factors like exercise, nutrition, sleep, and stress management profoundly influence their physiology. Instead, they relied almost exclusively on medications to patch symptoms after years of gradual decline. This realization was pivotal. It shifted my focus from reactive, disease-centered care to proactive, root-cause prevention.

Driven by this insight, I pursued advanced training in male hormone optimization and earned my NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) credential. I dove deep into evidence-based nutrition science, performance training principles, sleep physiology, and mental health strategies. My mission crystallized: help men build sustainable lifestyles that dramatically lower the risk of chronic disease while enhancing energy, strength, performance, and overall quality of life. This vision ultimately led me to Practical Health, where I can now provide the comprehensive, personalized care I had long envisioned.

Men’s Wellness: What It’s Like to Work With Me

Your initial appointment begins with an in-depth conversation about your current health, performance goals, and vision for your ideal future. We’ll examine your daily habits and identify areas that may be misaligned with your objectives. These visits typically last 60+ minutes, allowing us to build a strong foundation of trust and provide clear, actionable steps you can implement immediately.

We then order comprehensive laboratory testing to assess your physiology in detail. At the follow-up visit, we review results together and identify opportunities to optimize hormones, nutrients, recovery, and overall function to ensure your lifestyle efforts produce maximum results.

From there, patients typically choose between two ongoing paths:

  • Medical Management Membership: Regular visits every 8–12 weeks to monitor progress, adjust strategies, and optimize medications or therapies as needed.
  • Hands-On Coaching: More frequent, personalized guidance for lifestyle transformation or competitive performance preparation.

Who I Work With

I primarily partner with three groups of men:

  • Young men who feel they’re not operating at their full potential
  • Middle-aged men noticing a gradual decline in energy, strength, and performance
  • Older men who are ready to take control of their health after years of neglect

If any of these describe you, I encourage you to start with baseline labs and objective measurements. Understanding your data is the most effective way to make informed decisions and track real progress.
